Not every 4x4 needs the same type of tyre. A vehicle that spends most of its time on motorways has very different requirements from one regularly used on farms, forestry tracks or muddy ground.
The best choice depends on where you drive, how often you leave the road and what you want from your tyres.
Best for: Mainly road driving
If your 4x4 or SUV spends most of its time on tarmac, a road-focused tyre is usually the sensible choice. These tyres are designed around everyday road performance, including handling, comfort and wet-weather driving.
Best for: Mixed road and off-road driving
All-terrain tyres are designed as a compromise between everyday road driving and occasional off-road use. They can be a good option if you regularly move between tarmac, gravel, grass or rough tracks and don’t want a dedicated off-road tyre.
Best for: Regular or demanding off-road driving
If your 4x4 regularly tackles deep mud, rough ground or challenging off-road conditions, a more aggressive off-road tyre may be appropriate. These tyres prioritise off-road traction, but that can come with compromises when driving on normal roads.
The right 4x4 tyre depends on how and where you use your vehicle.
If your 4x4 or SUV is mainly driven on normal roads, a road-focused tyre may be the most appropriate choice. If you regularly drive on gravel, grass, tracks or other unmade surfaces, an all-terrain or specialist off-road tyre may be more suitable.
A more aggressive off-road tread isn’t automatically better.
It can provide additional traction away from the road but may involve compromises in areas such as road noise, handling and wear when used mainly on tarmac.
If you’re unsure, our tyre experts can help you choose a tyre based on your vehicle and how you use it.
We stock a range of 4x4 and SUV tyres for different vehicles and driving requirements, including options for predominantly on-road and more demanding off-road use.
Availability varies by tyre size, vehicle and brand. If the tyre you need isn’t currently in stock, speak to our team and we’ll advise you on the available options.
