Making your purchase choice simpler.

What is tyre labelling

Tyre labelling helps you compare important aspects of tyre performance before you buy.

The tyre label provides information about three key areas: fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise. These ratings can help you compare tyres, but they should be considered alongside factors such as tyre size, vehicle requirements, driving conditions and price.

Understanding the tyre label

Fuel Efficiency

What does it mean?

This rating reflects the tyre’s rolling resistance. Lower rolling resistance means the vehicle generally needs less energy to overcome resistance from the tyres, which can contribute to lower fuel consumption.

The rating ranges from A to G in Great Britain, with A representing the highest rated performance.

However, actual fuel consumption depends on other factors too, including your vehicle, driving style, tyre pressures and road conditions.

External Rolling Noise

What does it mean?

The noise figure on the tyre label measures the tyre’s external rolling noise, expressed in decibels (dB).

This measures noise outside the vehicle. It isn’t a measurement of how much road noise you’ll hear inside the car.

A lower external noise figure means the tyre produces less rolling noise under the relevant test conditions.

Wet Grip

What does it mean?

The wet grip rating provides an indication of the tyre’s performance during wet braking under standardised test conditions.

A higher rating indicates better tested wet-grip performance. However, the label isn’t a guarantee of stopping distance in every real-world situation. Speed, road surface, weather, tyre condition and vehicle characteristics can all affect braking performance.

The rating ranges from A to G in Great Britain.
